Strauss, Levi
(1829-1902)
   American manufacturer, of German origin. Born in Buttenheim, Germany, he went to the US in 1847. He initially began peddling in New York City; later he went to Louisville, Kentucky. In 1853 he went to San Francisco and established a store, Levi Strauss and Company. In 1873 he became a partner with Jacob W. Davis, a tailor from Nevada. They developed Levi jeans.
